What Are Bathroom Grab Rails? - Page 2

Bathroom grab rails, sometimes also known as bathroom support rails or grab bars, are support rails, or handles, fitted within a bathroom, or alongside a toilet. They offer stability and security when undertaking daily functions within the bathroom, as they provide a secure handle to hold on to when moving around, for example, reaching down to check the temperature of the water in the bath, bending down to clean the tub, climbing in and out of the bath, or lowering and raising from the toilet.

What Our Team Say About Bathroom Grab Rails

Our dedicated team have spent many years working in the mobility aids and daily living products sector. They are very knowledgeable about the products we sell. They work with Kate Makin, our Occupational Therapist, to ensure that they provide the best advice when it comes to information about our thousands of mobility aid products.

What Are the Benefits Of Installing Bathroom Grab Rails?

The firm and secure grip of these bathing aids give peace of mind and stability when moving around.

Grab rails are ideal in a bathroom setting where surfaces may be wet and slippery, especially for those who may be slightly unsteady on their feet, particularly alongside a shower, providing support when stepping in and out of the shower cubicle.

These mobility aids are easy to install, come in various assorted designs and provide an economical solution to safety in the bathroom.

What Types Do You Offer?

We offer many different styles suitable for use in the bathroom, including ones which physically clamp to the bath, those which are fixed permanently to the wall of the bathroom with screws, steel versions, plastic ones with rubberised grips (which tend to be warmer to the touch then steel ones), drop-down rails (which you can fold up when not in use), suction aids (which are ideal for a temporary solution, or if you want to take one away with you when travelling) and even a full-length floor to ceiling option which is tension mounted.

Is A Bathroom Grab Rail Suitable For Me?

If you, or a loved one, are slightly unsteady and could do with a little extra support in the bathroom, then these mobility aids are the ideal solution.

Is There Anything Specific To Look Out For?

  • Size – it is important to consider the width and height of the rail to ensure they will fit the space you have in the bathroom. If you are choosing one which clamps to the side of the bath, then it’s important to measure the bath’s side to ensure that it will clamp securely.
  • Style – it’s important to consider the type of bathing aid you would like, i.e. steel, plastic, permanently fixed, suction and, of course, colour. Most are available in white, but some also come in a range of different colours and finishes. Most rails are straight, however, there are a few which are curved which may provide a more pleasing cosmetic finish to your room. A folding version may be more suitable for alongside a toilet, as it can be raised out of the way for other people.
  • Suction – it’s important to remember that the surface you are attaching the rail to is completely smooth and not porous when using a suction grab rail. A smooth bathroom tile is ideal. Also, remember not to place the suction cup across grout lines, as the suction won’t be strong enough to hold the grab rail in place. The tiles (or mirror) surface must be totally clean, too!

Where should grab rails be placed in a bathroom?

Grab rails in a bathroom should be strategically placed near key areas where individuals may require support, such as next to the toilet, in the shower or bath area, and along pathways used for navigation. Consider placing them at a height and location that complements the user's natural movements and provides the necessary support for sitting, standing, and maintaining balance.

What height should a grab rail be in a bathroom?

The height of a grab rail in a bathroom should be determined based on the specific needs and preferences of the user. In general, a standard height range for grab bars is between 33 to 36 inches above the finished floor. However, customization may be necessary to accommodate individual preferences and mobility requirements.

How many grab bars should you have in a bathroom?

The number of grab bars needed in a bathroom depends on factors such as the size of the space, the layout, and the mobility needs of the user. At a minimum, it's recommended to have grab bars near the toilet and in the shower or bath area. Additional bars may be placed along pathways for added support. Consulting with a professional can help determine the optimal number and placement of grab bars for a specific bathroom.

Should grab bars be vertical or horizontal?

Both vertical and horizontal grab bars have their benefits and may serve different purposes. Vertical bars are often used for pulling or lifting motions, while horizontal bars offer support for gripping and steadying. The choice between vertical and horizontal placement should be based on the specific needs and preferences of the user, as well as the layout of the bathroom.
