Ellie Goldstein is Changing Strictly Come Dancing — and Changing Perceptions

Each year, Strictly Come Dancing returns to our screens with glitz, glamour and dazzling routines – and with it, the promise that something unexpected might capture our hearts. In 2025, that “something” is already making waves!

The announcement that Ellie Goldstein was going to compete as the first contestant with Down syndrome was a watershed moment in representation, inclusion and aspiration. And, as the current series unfolds, Ellie’s journey is already touching audiences, challenging preconceptions and offering fresh inspiration.

For Ability Superstore – whose mission is to empower people with disability-related needs – Ellie’s presence on Strictly is not just headline-worthy, it resonates deeply. Let’s explore Ellie’s story, what makes her stand out and how her path aligns with the spirit of inclusion that Ability Superstore champions.

From Runways to Ballroom – Ellie’s Journey so Far

Ellie Goldstein isn’t new to breaking boundaries. Before Strictly Come Dancing, she built a reputation as a model, actress, author and advocate.

Born in Ilford in 2001, Ellie underwent open-heart surgery as an infant and was told she might never walk, or talk – prognoses she emphatically proved wrong!

At age 15, Ellie joined Zebedee Management – an agency specialising in models with unique appearances – and began modelling for high-profile campaigns.

In 2023, Ellie became the first model with Down syndrome to appear on the cover of British Vogue, putting her front and centre in global conversations about diversity, beauty and inclusion.

… the BBC drama, Malory Towers. Ellie's public profile is built not merely on “overcoming”, but on being creatively and purposefully visible.

In August 2025, when it was announced that Ellie Goldstein was stepping into the Strictly ballroom, it made headlines across all media outlets. Ellie herself spoke of being 'absolutely over the moon' and called the opportunity to dance on a show she’s loved for years a 'dream come true'.

Ellie's inclusion marks a progression in the show’s evolving inclusivity.

Strictly Come Dancing has previously welcomed contestants with visible, or invisible disabilities – from Jody Cundy in 2023 to Rose Ayling-Ellis (the show’s first deaf contestant) and Ellie Simmonds (with dwarfism) – but Ellie Goldstein’s participation is a new milestone.

In short, Ellie isn’t just adding diversity, she’s expanding what we imagine when we think of who can dance under the stage lights.

Mid-Series Spotlight – Early Impressions and Audience Reactions

As the 2025 Strictly Come Dancing series is now well underway, early impressions already hint at Ellie’s impact.

In the Strictly launch show, viewers witnessed the moment Ellie and her pro partner, Vito Coppola, were introduced to the audience – a poignant, high-emotion moment met with widespread cheers.

On social media, fans expressed excitement, admiration and hope… “First ever contestant with Down syndrome!!! Love this!!!! Strictly doing disability representation right!”

Commentary in press and online suggests Ellie is more than a "novelty" – she’s being treated as a serious contestant and a symbol of possibility. Already, some odds-makers are placing her as a contender, saying that she’s "leading early betting odds".

The judges’ feedback, Ellie's rehearsals, and her growth from week to week, will tell the core story – but the narrative arc is already powerful; a young woman pushing boundaries, dancing under the same spotlight and giving viewers a new lens on ability, determination and inclusion.

What Ellie Means for Representation and Perception

Ellie’s presence on Strictly Come Dancing doesn’t erase challenges, but it is a force for shifting perceptions. Here are some reasons why…

Visibility Transforms Narratives

When people with Down syndrome are visible on mainstream, primetime shows, it challenges stereotypes about who “belongs” in performance, media and society. Millions watch Strictly; seeing Ellie dance broadcasts the message that disability does not mean exclusion.

It Inspires People with Disabilities and their Families

For children and adults with Down syndrome, seeing Ellie take to the dance floor can spark hope, aspiration and confidence. It sends a message; it’s not about limitations, but about showcasing talent, joy and individuality.

It Challenges Producers and Society to Adapt

Including a dancer with Down syndrome encourages the show’s team – choreographers, directors, trainers – to think creatively, accommodate different learning styles, or physical needs, and broadens what “successful performance” means. It nudges society to do the same.

It Amplifies Inclusion Across Sectors

Ellie’s journey links fashion, media, advocacy and now dance. Her wider story – as model, author, influencer – feeds into a cultural shift; one where inclusion is not “added” but is integral. It raises the bar on representation. It invites viewers and media to ask; who else deserves a seat (or a dance!) at the table.

Ability Superstore and Practical Support – Dance, Mobility and Inclusion

At Ability Superstore, we believe in enabling independence, confidence and dignity. While Ellie herself may not need mobility aids in her daily life, her presence underscores that assistive equipment and accessibility are part of a wider ecosystem of inclusion.

Here are some product types that people with Down syndrome, or people supporting them, might find useful, especially where mobility, stability, or support is needed…

These aids are part of a wider range of mobility equipment, home adaptations and daily assistive solutions that Ability Superstore offers to help people lead independent lives. Small adaptations like grab rails, supportive seating and accessible pathways help people of varied needs participate more fully in life’s activities. In Ellie’s case, participating in Strictly Come Dancing requires support, adjustment and understanding – just as inclusive homes, public spaces and services require thoughtful design and empathy.

What to Watch for as Strictly Comes Dancing 2025 Unfolds

If you’re following Strictly this year, here are a few storylines worth watching with Ellie in mind…

Viewer Response

Legacy Effect

After the series concludes, measure whether Ellie’s inclusion spurs more casting of performers with disability, more inclusive hiring in media, or more visibility for Down syndrome in arts.

For Ability Superstore, telling this story is also part of our mission to normalise disability, to elevate voices, to show that everyone benefits when accessibility is front and centre.

In Ellie's Words – 'Strength, Joy and Ambition'

A screenshot of Ellie Goldstein taken from the Strictly Come Dancing website

Ellie’s spoken of her excitement about joining Strictly Come Dancing, 'I know it’s going to be challenging, but I’m ready to do it with the glitter and glamour and make some magic on that dancefloor'.

In her Vogue cover feature, Ellie reflected: '[It’s about] following your hopes and dreams… never give up, be who you are and smile all the way'.

Closing Thoughts – the Power of a Dance

Ellie's participation on Strictly Come Dancing is more than a casting choice – it’s a statement about visibility, ability and ambition.

This is real people, real talent, real possibility. The magic of Strictly – the thrill, the artistry, the cultural resonance – now intersects with a deeper social purpose, showing that dance, performance, courage and creativity are for everyone.

For readers and viewers, it’s a reminder – never underestimate someone just because they “look different.” For Ability Superstore, it’s proof of why we exist – to support, to advocate, to provide tools so that all people may thrive on their terms.

So tune in to Strictly Come Dancing, cheer Ellie on, and witness in real time how inclusive representation can shift hearts, minds, and the dancefloor itself.
