As various parts of the UK are put into different types of lockdown scenarios (November 2020), many people are worried about feeling isolated and becoming ill whilst being alone and cut off from friends and family. So now is an excellent time to think about personal alarms, and our partners at Taking Care  have an alarm package to suit the needs of just about everybody.

What Is A Personal Alarm?
In its simplest form, a personal alarm ensures you can get help in any emergency, day or night. A personal alarm will quickly connect you to a 24-hour Emergency Resolution Centre, who can call your family, friends, carers or the emergency services.

There are no phone numbers to remember if you fall, feel ill or are in distress. Worn around the neck as a pendant or on the wrist like a watch, a personal alarm is easy to use with an emergency button you press when you need help. If your loved ones cannot be with you, many people find it reassuring to know that they can call for help in an emergency.

Technology has advanced so much these days that there are now several different types of personal alarms available to suit all needs.

How To Get Help With a Personal Alarm
Taking Care have three Emergency Resolution Centres in the UK that answer calls from their personal alarms, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Emergency Resolution teams are trained on how to deal with emergency situations extremely quickly and provide a patient, friendly service that provides peace of mind and support to over 70,000 people in the UK.

When you call the Emergency Resolution Centre through your personal alarm, they will already have your details and a list of your emergency contacts. They will know who you are and where you are, even if you are unable to speak:

  1. They will quickly answer your alarm call (with an average response time of 5 seconds) and speak to you through your personal alarm equipment. If you are able to talk, you can tell them what help you need, or they can give you advice on what to do next.
  2. If you aren’t able to communicate, or the situation is deemed critical by the team, they will call your emergency contacts, a carer or neighbour for example, or the emergency services.
  3. Since 2008 alone, this life-saving service has helped 170,000 people stay safe and independent in their homes.

Let’s have a look at the different alarms from Taking Care, the UK's only Which? Trusted Trader Approved personal alarm provider and the exclusive provider of the Age UK personal alarm service.

Age UK Personal Alarm

This popular, life-saving personal alarm is a great solution if you are worried about how to call for help from your home or garden.

You will receive an alarm hub and pendant. You can wear the pendant on a chain or discreetly on your wrist. By simply pressing the button on the pendant, it automatically contacts one of Taking Care’s Emergency Resolution Centres through the alarm hub.

The personal alarm will work up to 75 metres (nearly 250 feet) from the main alarm hub so it can also be used as a mobility aid in your garden.

When setting up the alarm (which you can do yourself or Taking Care can install for you), you will be asked to test the alarm from various locations within your home and garden to ensure that it works wherever you are likely to be.

Fall Alarm Package

The Fall Alarm works in exactly the same way as the personal alarm package above, with one crucial addition.

This alarm will automatically activate if the person wearing the pendant falls. The alarm is designed to detect sudden drops in movement.

The other alarm functions are the same as with the personal alarm, with 24 hour, 7 days a week coverage from the Emergency Resolution Centre.

Smoke Detection and Personal Alarm Package

According to UK Government statistics, the most common cause of fire-related fatalities in 2018/19 was ‘overcome by gas or smoke’.

You can, therefore, see just how crucial smoke detectors alarms are and the Smoke Detection and Personal alarm package from Taking Care will protect you and your home.

Along with all the benefits of the Personal Alarm, this package also includes two monitored smoke alarms.

When triggered, the smoke alarms will sound an alarm and call the 24 hour Emergency Resolution Centre, who will talk with you over the alarm base unit to assess the situation. If they are unable to reach you or further help is needed, then they will call the emergency services (fire brigade) straight away.

This gives you peace of mind that your home is being looked after if you are hard of hearing, or when you are asleep or away visiting relatives.

GPS Personal Alarm

Along with personal alarms for your home and garden, Taking Care also provide personal alarms for when you are out and about.

The GPS Personal Alarm is a small pendant that can be kept on a set of keys, in your bag or pocket. It uses a multi-network SIM that ensures you can contact the Emergency Resolution Centre wherever there is mobile network coverage.

So, wherever you are, in town shopping or visiting friends, you can be sure that you won’t be alone in an emergency situation.

Dementia Tracker

For those living with Dementia, Taking Care have a simpler design of the GPS alarm – the Dementia Tracker. This alarm does not have any flashing lights or buttons to press. Family or friends can monitor the whereabouts of their loved one by logging onto the monitoring website on their computer, tablet or phone to find out where they are. In an emergency, you can contact Taking Care’s Emergency Resolution Centre who will be able to locate the device and direct you or the emergency services to its location.

Personal Alarm Watch

For the more tech-savvy and active customer, the personal alarm watch is a great solution if you are worried about how to get help when you are on the go. It has an SOS button that you can press to call the Emergency Resolution Centre, GPS tracking, geo-fencing and heart rate monitoring.

You set it up using an app for your Apple or Android phone and friends and family can monitor the GPS location and receive health alerts through the app. The Personal Alarm Watch also allows you to make and receive phone calls and send voice messages from it, just like a mobile phone.
