Falls Management Guide
Balance and stability can become difficult for a multitude of different reasons - An acquired injury, a neurological disorder, a congenital condition or simply ageing.
This lack of balance and stability can often put someone at risk of falling, and this often results in injury.
There are many aids to prevent falls such as non-slip mats, grab rails and night lights but we also have aids that alert the carer or relative should a fall happen.

We understand that accidents can change lives. Our large range of stand-alone telecare and stand-alone technology products are designed to prevent accidents from happening whilst helping make life easy.
What Is Stand Alone Telecare?
Stand alone telecare is a term that describes products that can be used on their own to alert the user of a danger. A good economical example is the EZ Fill Liquid Level Indicator which will indicate to the user when the cup is getting full, preventing scalding and spillages.
Here at Ability Superstore we have a huge range of stand-alone telecare products. Our range has been carefully selected and includes products such as wandering alerts, flood prevention monitors, amplified telephones and fall prevention alarms.
We believe stand alone telecare should be affordable and accessible for everyone. If you require something that is not listed in our falls management section, call customer services to discuss your requirements with one of our friendly staff.
So who would benefit from our stand-alone telecare?
Stand-alone telecare is great for those who would like to stay at home for longer. You can install simple aids around the home to make each room a much safer place to live.
This technology is beneficial for everyone. It can reassure a carer that if there ever is a need for assistance they can be there. For example a person suffering from dementia may wander at night. Factors such as dark lights, pets and staircases can all cause falls. A solution to this is the Care Call Movement Monitor. It uses an infra-red sensor to detect movement. If movement is detected it alerts the carer via a pager, allowing the carer to attend before accidents occur.
We also have lots of aids to assist memory loss, items such as pill reminders can remind the user to take their pills at the correct time.
Which Items For Which Room?
Unsure what products you may need? Our mobility aids and safety and security devices have been categorised by room, allowing you to browse and discover products you may not have known existed!
Take a look at the examples below:
Living Room
It can be difficult to be there for a vulnerable person who needs constant monitoring. You may be in the kitchen preparing lunch, meaning you can't see what is happening in the living room. Items such as the Long Life Chair Sensor can alert you when the person leaves the chair by using pressure sensors and a separate monitor to emit a loud tone.
Bathroom
Many accidents can happen in the bathroom. Problems such as incorrect bathing temperatures, slips and falls are often occurrences. We have carefully chosen products such as the Bath Thermometer to help eliminate these problems. And our range of Grab Rails and Alarms are must haves for any bathroom.
Bedroom
At night monitoring a person's behaviour can be difficult. We have lots of aids to help the carer stay informed whist also getting a more comfortable nights sleep.
Bed alarms and Pressure Sensors are great for alerting the carer when the person is moving around. This simple solution can help prevent further falls.
Case study
Sweet Dreams
Jackie lives with her mother Jane who is 85 and suffers from dementia.
Jackie had trouble sleeping at night as her mum regularly woke up at different times of the night and began to wander around the home. Jackie got in touch with us and we recommended the Border Patrol Safety System.
As Jane left the bed and broke the infra-red beam it emitted a loud alarm, waking Jackie to prevent any falls. This allows Jackie to sleep well knowing if Jane wakes in the middle of the night she will be awoken too.
